In Italy, the best collaborators are simpatico. Perfectly fitting that description is the relationship between Fabscarte, the Milan-based company that produces exquisite handcrafted, handpainted wallpaper, and the New York artist Martyn Thompson, whose photography inspired the Italian team to create two new, innovative wallpaper designs.
Introduced during Milan Design Week 2017, these wholly novel designs are poetically named Midnight Moon Dust and Rose Scented Mirage. What began as two-dimensional articulations by Thompson of his romantic aesthetic vision, have since morphed into original, painted interpretations by Fabscarte. The company has translated Thompson’s approach to color and nuanced detail into elegant, highly dimensional patterns.
Although both of these wallpaper designs make artful use of paint amid layers of tissue paper, their articulated decorative surfaces couldn’t be more different. “‘Midnight Moon Dust’ evokes a nocturnal world, mysterious and charming,” explains Emilio Brazzolotto, who co-founded Fabscarte in 2012 with fellow masters in the decorative arts. “‘Rose Scented Mirage’ suggests a world of calm, a peaceful morning, with a gentle sun. They represent opposites. One is light-ful, sweet, suave, ethereal. In the other one, there’s more tension, more movement. It is somehow restless with its lacerations and strong metallic colors.”
