Rug design was not an obvious career choice for Ryan Reitmeyer when he attended the University of Texas in the ’90s. “I was an economics major,” says Reitmeyer, managing partner at Carol Piper Rugs in Houston. “In my senior year I took an elective course in the history of European architecture and did very well.” So well that his professor urged him to follow a creative path.
Next, Reitmeyer attended the Bard Graduate Center in New York, where he studied with carpet scholar Sarah B. Sherrill. He also worked at two premier rug firms: Michaelian & Kohlberg and Carini Lang. In 2006, he headed home to Houston, and Carol Piper, a former customer of his at Carini Lang, hired him to handle sales. She also encouraged him to design an original line of rugs.
